Italian conductor Valentina Peleggi is the Mackerras Fellow at English National Opera for this season and next, conducting her own main-house production of Bizet Carmen in January 2020.
Last season she made her in house conducting debut with two performances of La Boheme in February, conducting the ENO studio production of Dido and Aeneas in May. She is also Guest Music Director at the Theatro Sao Pedro in Sao Paulo, conducting an Italian opera there every season.
This follows 2 years as Resident Conductor of the OSESP São Paulo Symphony Orchestra under Marin Alsop and Principal Conductor of their professional chorus (ongoing), when she was awarded the Sao Paulo Critics’ Prize for Conductor of the Year 2018 and the Audience vote in Revista Concerto (Brazil’s major classical music magazine).
Guest conducting this season includes concerts with the BBC Scottish Symphony, Residentie Orkest, Richmond Symphony, Bournemouth Symphony and Orchestra della Toscana. She will also conduct a subscription week with the Sao Paulo Symphony and the symphonic chorus.
Valentina studied in Rome, Siena and here at the Royal Academy, winning the top prizes at each institution.
