Laurent Bayle

In 1977, Laurent Bayle becomes associate director of the Théâtre de l’Est lyonnais. At the end of 1978, he is appointed general administrator of the Atelier Lyrique du Rhin, an institution associated with the Opéra du Rhin which fosters creation of contemporary lyric opera. In parallel, he handles the delegated production of two editions (1980 and 1982) of the “Biennale Voix, Théâtre et Musiques d’Aujourd’hui” organized at the Maison de la Culture in Nanterre.

In 1982, he creates the Festival Musica in Strasbourg, an event dedicated to contemporary music, of which he ensures the general direction until the end of 1986 prior to assuming its presidency in 2017. 

In early 1987, he is appointed artistic director of Ircam (the Institute for Music/Acoustic Research and Coordination associated with the Centre Pompidou) then directed by Pierre Boulez, to whom he will succeed in January 1992. 

On December 15, 2001, he becomes general manager of the Cité de la musique. In September 2006, the Minister of Culture also entrusts him with the implementation of the reopening of the Salle Pleyel. 

In March 2006, the Minister of Culture and Communication and the Mayor of Paris announce the project to create a large symphony hall to be located in the Parc de la Villette. Laurent Bayle is appointed president of the provisional association dedicated to prefigure the Philharmonie de Paris. 

In 2010, he implements a children orchestras project baptized Demos (Dispositif d’éducation musicale et orchestrale à vocation sociale), a social and orchestral structure for music education which is currently being deployed in disadvantaged neighborhoods throughout the national territory with the aim of reaching sixty orchestras by 2020. 

Inaugurated in January 2015, the Philharmonie de Paris marks the birth of a new public institution,”Cité de la musique – Philharmonie de Paris”, co-funded by the State and the city of Paris. This large facility includes three concert halls, the Musée de la musique, an educational center focused on collective practice, and numerous digital music resources. On March 30, 2016, the President of the Republic appoints Laurent Bayle as general manager of this institution for a five-year term. 

In April 2018, the Minister of Culture and Communication and the Mayor of Paris entrusts him with the mission of integrating the Orchestre de Paris (the Philharmonie’s main resident) into the public institution of Cité de la musique – Philharmonie de Paris.
